The Edo State wing of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has complained about the shortage of teachers in public secondary schools across the state.

The state secretary of the union, Mr Mike Itua, said in an interview with newsmen in Benin that the problem would have adverse effect on students’ performance.

Itua said that the state government must urgently recruit more teachers, in order to maintain standard in the schools.

According to him, the situation will degenerate to a state of emergency, if new teachers are not employed before the end of the year, because more teachers would be retiring.
